The ASU CARE Lab is dedicated to finding ways to ensure everyone, no matter their background, can thrive from childhood to adulthood. We believe to understand the psychology of individuals and communities, what is going well and strengths are as important as what is not going well, weaknesses, and disorders. As such, we research interventions and processes that merge positive, developmental, and social psychology theories with a focus on relationships and emotions (e.g., love, gratitude, joy) starting in infancy. We aim to support individuals, communities, and systems to overcome adversity and promote thriving.

Current Graduate Students

Emilia Berkes is a M.S. Psychology student at Arizona State University. She also obtained her B.S. in Psychology from ASU in Fall 2023. Her research interests lie at the intersection of positive psychology, social psychology, and clinical psychology. More specifically, she is interested in the development of intervention programs that promote resilience and greater well-being in parents and their children.

Orchee Syed received her Bachelor’s in Psychology from Arizona State University’s Barrett Honors College in May of 2024, winning undergraduate accolades such as the ASU Department of Psychology’s Best Thesis Award and the Outstanding Graduate in Leadership and Service Award. She is currently pursuing her Master’s of Science in psychology funded by the Graduate College Enrichment Fellowship. Her research interests include: adolescent mental health and psychopathology, underrepresented youth risk and resilience, intervention efficacy, and cultural differences in developmental trajectories. After earning her MS, she hopes to continue her research and academic career in a clinical or developmental PhD program.

Joseph Chirillo received his B.S in Psychology from Southern Illinois University Edwardsville (SIUE) in Spring 2025. Broadly, his research interests revolve around positive psychology. More specifically, Joey is interested in examining interventions that could help promote well-being, mindfulness, and self-regulation within adolescents.
